ScanPro FAQs

How do I determine what lens I need when ordering a ScanPro?
The ScanPro1000 uses a single 7X to 54X zoom lens that will cover your film applications. This means that you do not need to specify a lens. The zoom capability will provide the magnification that is needed for your film application. If you will be using Ultra Fiche or Micro Books you will need to choose the 8X to 100X zoom lens.
The ScanPro200i, 300i, 400i, and 500i models use fixed lenses, so when considering those models, it is necessary to specify the lens that is required for your film application. You may know the magnification that you need for your film. If not, the easy way to determine which lens is the best match for getting the microfilm image inside (best fit) the VIEW SCREEN marks, is to use the ScanPro lens template. The ScanPro lens template can be viewed and downloaded from the following link: ScanPro Lens Template.
Follow the instructions on the template for determining the required magnification. You may want to copy the lens template to a transparency for ease of use. The template is arranged into a series of outlines, Each outline represents a film image that will magnify to 8.5"X11" (or A4) when using the lens specified for that outline. If you are dealing with more than one film image size, you will need to consider additional lenses.
Although the film template will help you get the correct answer most of the time, you can still have special conditions to consider: 1. You may find that the customer wants to have one lens for several film image sizes, so what you are looking for is a best compromise. 2. You may find that the customer needs two lenses for an application where one lens is used to find an area on the film image and a second, lower magnification lens is used to make a copy of that area for ease of reading. Newspapers are a good example of this type of requirement. -
When Do I Need Image Rotation?
The ScanPro1000 includes both optical and digital rotation, so it will work with any film orientation. However, when considering the ScanPro200i, 300i, and 400i (image rotation is not available for the 500i) models it is necessary to determine if image rotation is required for the intended film application.
To start with, IMAGE ROTATION lenses are not required for scanning and are not required for viewing on the PC monitor. The Microfilm ScanPro scans the entire area of the view screen and the software provides the ability to view scans on the PC monitor in any desired orientation. However, it is not unusual for images to be filmed with the information NOT correct reading (the information is laying-on-its-side requiring the user to tilt their head to view the image). Again, the software can rotate the image on the monitor so that it is correct reading, but to view a non correct reading film image as correct reading on the ScanPro VIEW SCREEN requires IMAGE ROTATION
(to see a graphical representation, Click Here).
Make sure to determine if your film is correct reading. If it is not, you will need IMAGE ROTATION to view the film image as correct reading on the ScanPro VIEW SCREEN. Keep in mind, it is difficult to add image rotation to a scanner once it has been shipped from the factory.
